By Edward M. Bury

Guidebooks and travel sites offer some great advice and insight on how to find and enjoy what Chicago has to offer. But, savvy travelers know long-time locals often can provide an unparalleled perspective on a great city like Chicago. Here are five “must-do” activities suggested by a life-long Chicagoan.

1. See Chicago from the Water. The Chicago skyline truly is one of the most dynamic and compelling urban vistas in the world. From the towering modern office buildings to the span of classic buildings along Michigan Avenue, the skyline is breathtaking and best appreciated from a distance. Outside of flying, the best way to view the skyline is by water. Many boat tour operators dock along the Chicago River near Michigan Avenue and offer hour-long or longer tours from May through October; the cost is around $25 for adults. Some feature commentary on the landmark buildings along the river, and some pass through the locks onto Lake Michigan. Or, visitors can take the Chicago Water Taxi from the foot of the Wrigley Building (400 N. Michigan Av.) to the dock at Madison Street. The 11-minute ride costs just $2 each way.

2. See Chicago from on High. The landscape surrounding Chicago is flat. Very flat. The only way to take in full depth and breadth of the area is from a very tall building. On a good, clear day, it’s possible to view as far north as Wisconsin and east into Indiana and Michigan. Some hotels offer dramatic views of the city, but the best perspective comes from an observation deck. The Sears Tower Skydeck in the building of the same name rises 103 stories or 1,353 feet in the air, offering 360-degree views. Another option is the John Hancock Observatory, which soars 94 floors along North Michigan Avenue. Both observatories charge admission fees, and crowds can be lengthy, especially on clear summer days. Another option: visit the Signature Room restaurant and lounge on the 96th floor of the Hancock building. There’s no admission fee, but you’ll get a tremendous view for the price of a cocktail.

Vinyan hd 3. Ride the El. Chicago’s “el” – the elevated rapid transit network operated by the Chicago Transit Authority — is how many get to and from work. But it’s also a great way to see neighborhoods from a unique viewpoint. The most interesting line is the Brown Line, which winds its way from downtown through hip and historic neighborhoods. Pick up the Brown Line el at the Clark and Lake station and head north. Your train will twist and turn its way through Lincoln Park, Lakeview and Ravenswood. Along the way, you’ll see historic homes and businesses, and even get peeks of the downtown skyline. Exit at Armitage Avenue for some high-end shopping, or continue up to Southport Avenue for dining and clubs. The cost is $2 per ride.

4. Eat an Italian Beef. Deep-dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dogs originated here, of course, but these days, good examples of these culinary mainstays can be found outside the city. But another iconic comfort food item really can only be found here. It’s the Italian beef sandwich. Not a Philly or French Dip, the Italian beef is seasoned roast beef cooked in natural juices and served on Italian bread. Order one dry (no juice) or wet (dipped), and opt for hot peppers (called giardiniera) or sweet peppers. Every beef stand has its own carefully guarded recipes. In the downtown area, two stands stand out: Mr. Beef on Orleans Street or Al’s Beef on Ontario Street. Remember to take lots of napkins. Expect to pay around $5 to $6 per sandwich.

download Monkeys, Go Home!

5. Visit Lincoln Park. Some clarification: There is both a 1,200-acre park and a cool adjacent neighborhood named after the 16th President. Both offer plenty of things to do without spending a lot of money. The park, located just north of downtown, stretches along Lake Michigan for around two miles and features the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Lincoln Park Conservatory, a couple of beaches, running paths, harbors, tennis courts, a golf course, a summer theater and a driving range. Stroll west to explore pocket neighborhoods like Old Town, DePaul and Sheffield where tree-lined streets are flanked by turn-of-the-century brownstones, greystones and row houses. Restaurants, bars and shopping abound, especially along North Clark Street. Getting to Lincoln Park is easy from downtown. Take the #151 Sheridan bus along North Michigan Avenue and exit when you reach the park.

In researching for this issue, I discovered that “infotainment” is a neologism (pronounced nee-AH-low-djism) or a newly invented word or term.

Wikipedia, on the web, defines infotainment as a general type of news media broadcast program which either provides a combination of current events news and entertainment programming, or an entertainment program structured in a news format.

I don’t see infotainment as being relegated only to the news or media world. Instead, meetings and meeting audiences expect information to be packaged in an entertaining way. So infotainment is an element in successful meetings.

Meeting participants demand meaningful information and interaction during meeting. Successful meetings will engage audiences' senses, minds and hearts in a, creative and strategically structured way.

Whether overtly stated it or not, the secret of successful entertainment at meetings and events isn't about creating an impressive “show”. The secret is to know and fully understand each meeting's (or event) primary purpose, primary messages, and intent.

So it’s more than a song, more than a dance, more than a laugh?

Definitely, and the more you unearth the “hidden value” in entertainment the easier you can justify the expense and time to bring in an act.

Recently, I experienced some unique venues. My personal experience makes me both reflect on and further endorse the appropriate use of unique venues for the right meeting.

I was at Chicago Indoor Racing recently and experienced both a meeting and the racing. The thrill of competition, the feel of driving on the track…those memories will stay with me. Among the participants in the meeting, the experience broke down barriers and was the cornerstone to a great discussion about competition, teamwork, and risk. (Of course, the fact that I held my own on the racetrack among a group of men was also very thrilling!) Find out more about Chicago Indoor Racing at http://www.chicagoindoorracing.com/or click here Chicago Indoor Racing or by email to Alisa Peters at apeters@chicagoindoorracing.com Alisa Peters.

I also had the opportunity to do a site visit of The Hudson Theater while staying at the Millennium Hotel in New York City. This renovated theater captures history, culture, interesting architecture, and colorful stories. A theater along with pre-event space, like the Hudson Theater, can accommodate board/shareholder meetings, award presentations, press events, and meetings. Also some theaters offer other unique spaces that most people never see (think about green rooms, lounges and backstage areas). These spots may be perfect for exclusive, smaller, intimate events.
Several years ago I spoke at a meeting held in a cinematic theater. The venue lent itself to creative food choices for the participants.
While planning your next event, you are likely to think of various hotels as well as conference and convention centers. Have you ever thought of utilizing a high school, university or college for your event? Here are my suggestions honed through practical experience.

Tip 1: Review a university’s webpage for Event Planning Guides.

Many institutions have placed their event planning needs directly online for access 24/7. Detailed descriptions of the meeting space available, catering options, as well as their rental policies can be found on-line. One example is the University of Central Florida.

Tip 2: Locate University Conference Centers for added convenience.

Some universities house conference centers on their campus. These centers are suited for the small- to medium-size meetings and they also lack the distractions of a resort-style facility. Many offer overnight accommodations that are a far cry from dorm rooms. For example, the Conference Center & Inn at Clemson University includes accommodations, dining options, audio/visual equipment and support, meeting rooms, as well as some moderate recreation all on-site.

Tip 3: Don’t discount university housing.

Depending on the timing of your meeting, you may be able to utilize the dormitories on the institution’s campus. Instead of conducting your meeting on campus and housing your presenters and participants at an off-campus hotel, ask if you can rent out dormitory space on campus. You will have to keep in mind that some dorms can be sparse in their accommodations.

Tip 4: Take advantage of audio/visual equipment and technical expertise.

Why bring in your own LCD projector and overhead? Many university classrooms are now equipped with Smartroom technology. These classrooms may include wireless networking, mounted LCD projectors, touch screen room control, DVD/CD/VHS players, interactive electronic whiteboard and more! Many room rental fees include the use of the Smartroom equipment.

Tip 5: Beware of restricted parking.

Parking on many university campuses is restricted. They have lots marked for faculty, staff, students, and visitors and most require a parking pass, token, hang-tag or your first born to enter. When working with the Department of Parking and Transportation, you may be able to pre-pay for a set number of parking passes to distribute to your attendees beforehand. In other cases, you may be able to have a designated lot solely for your group. Holding your event on a day in which classes are not in session is your best chance at premium parking options.

Tip 6: Explore dining options.

Your participants’ may find they take home the beginnings of the “Freshman Fifteen” after your event. Dining options have grown beyond vending machines at most universities. If you would like to give your attendees a variety of dining options, you can investigate using meal tickets. These tickets could be redeemed at any of the university food court areas. If you are offering a banquet-type food function, many universities will schedule catering from their internal vendor.

Universities can be a one-stop-shop for your events as they can provide many meeting necessities from parking and housing to catering and audio/visual equipment.
