Chicago Florist Flowers With Feeling Provides Unique Floral Ideas For Your Next Event

February 28th, 2007

The John G. Shedd Aquarium

Chicago is an extraordinarily unique venue which offers an engaging and inspirational atmosphere for private corporate and social events. Dimly lit galleries featuring rare and exotic aquatic species give the Shedd Aqarium a certain charm and character unlike any other

Chicago venue.
The Caribbean Reef, centrally located in the Grand Rotunda on the main floor, boasts a 360 degree view of an underwater reef community. Typically the hub of many special events at the Shedd Aquarium, several galleries radiate from this center point and offer additional seating for larger events. Light or brightly colored floral décor and candlelight are best suited for the dimly lit galleries while deeper colors tend to disappear.  Each gallery presents a one of a kind dining experience enhanced by surrounding exhibits. Buffet style service is common and allows guests to stroll and mingle, however the uniqueness and charm of this venue makes large scale seated events feel quaint and personal. The Aquarium can accommodate up to 1,200 guests for a reception and 550 guests for a seated dinner in the Caribbean Reef Rotunda and adjoining galleries. In addition to the Grand Rotunda and surrounding galleries, The Shedd Aquarium

also offers the unique opportunity to hold your event on its outdoor terrace which offers breathtaking views of

Chicago’s lakefront, Grant Park and Navy Pier.
For more information on the John G. Shedd Aquarium visit http://www.sheddaquarium.org/ or visit www.flowerswithfeeling.com for floral and decorating ideas for your event.

The theme of this year's 20th anniversary of the Illinois Governer's Conference at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago was “The Future is Ours” showcasing how Illinois and the Tourism Industry has evolved over the last twenty years.  As a gathering of colleagues and industry partners from every region of Illinois, it provided a creative forum for dialogue, learning and planning as well as reacquainting of friends in the meetings and leisure groups industries.  A special thanks to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Tourism and the Illinois Tourism Alliance (formerly Visit Illinois) for producing this momentous event.  The conference was enlightening, energetic, educational and delivered tools to take Illinois tourism into the 21st century.  The gathering was a unique opportunity to explore the state's past initiatives, learn about new industry trends and online technologies, network with fellow industry insiders and craft ideas for the future of Illinois Tourism.

And the winner is…….Cort Carlson of the McHenry County Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Cort accepted an award for the best print advertising campaign for the McHenry County area to include McHenry hotels, McHenry attractions and Mchenry as a destination for corporate meetings, events and as a prominent leisure destination in North Western Illinois.

Chicago Restaurants among America's Best Restaurants

February 8th, 2007

Dining Honors

Chicago’s new Alinea at 1723 N. Halstedis Gourmet Magazine’s Number One choice for America’s Best Restaurants in 2006. “This is dining as performance art,” states the magazine, “and each tiny interactive dish teases, astonishes, delights.”

Once again the Europe-based Restaurant Magazine revealed its 50 Best Restaurants in the World and Charlie Trotter's made the list for 2006. Only eight restaurants in the United States made the “top 50.”

Trotter’s was named “Most Popular” restaurant in the latest Zagat Chicago Survey. The survey awarded the city’s “Best Décor” honor to NoMi, located in the Park Hyatt Hotel. The Zagat survey also stated that, cost-wise, Chicago “is a relative bargain” when compared to Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco and Miami, although our restaurants, on average, are slightly more costly than Los Angeles.

Plan Early for Next Summer’s Baseball Events in Chicago

February 7th, 2007

Plan Early for Next Summer’s Baseball Events

While there was no repeat World Series victory by the White Sox in 2006, and the Cubs finished in last place, baseball was never more popular in Chicago.

Figures released by ESPN show that the White Sox drew 2,957,414 fans for the 2006 season. That number put the White Sox in the Top 10 attendance (#9) for Major League teams. New sections of “Scout Seating” behind home plate helped attract visitors seeking a VIP view, and the new centerfield porch section added to the appeal for group outings.

Meanwhile, on the North Side, the Cubs continued to score in the attendance game even when the team often failed to score in the baseball games. The Cubs drew an amazing 3,123,215 fans to wonderful Wrigley Field, ranking 6th among the 20 Major League teams in attendance, according to ESPN.

The New York Yankees topped the 2006 attendance list by drawing 4,200,518 fans to Yankee Stadium.

Tentative schedules for the White Sox and Cubs have been released and planners should be targeting desired dates for group outings as “prime” games will sell out well before the season begins.

Naper Settlement & the Naperville Heritage Society

February 7th, 2007

ning PointHaven't seen any groundhogs around Naper Settlement lately, so we don't know if spring is just around the corner or not. But we do have the cure for the winter doldrums with programs, workshops and activities all month long in February.

In our new program, “Bittersweet History of Chocolate,” we took three parts history, added a heaping dose of chocolate and came up with a delicious recipe for fun the weekend of Feb 18- 19.

Knock, knock. Who's there? Doorknobs, of course, from the incredible collection of two Naperville residents that will be displayed in a fabulous new exhibit.

The versatile Terry Lynch will bring his “Underground Railroad” presentation to the History Speaks Lecture Series on Feb. 11. If you've enjoyed meeting Terry in the past — Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Jackson and Father Christmas — you won't want to miss this meaningful program.

Quell cabin fever by signing up the kids for some classes and workshops including Manners for Minors, School's Out programs for girls (with extended hours!) and fun-filled music classes with Amy Lowe.

Don't take the groundhog's word for it. Start your springtime activities early at Naper Settlement!

Turning Point

View hundreds of antique and unique doorknobs from a Naperville couple’s extensive collection in this special exhibit, “Doorknobs: A Handle of History,” which features hardware of the past. The exhibit will be displayed from Feb. 9 to April 8 in the Heritage Gallery.

The Underground Railroad

Learn how a “safe house” was used as a stopping point for runaway slaves to gain rest and nourishment before going on to safety in Canada in “The Underground Railroad” to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Century Memorial Chapel, located on the grounds of Naper Settlement.

Part of the History Speaks Lecture Series, Terry Lynch will portray an owner of an Illinois safe house and highlight several safe houses in the immediate Chicagoland area. Appropriate for all ages. Admission is $6 per person.

How sweet It Is!

Don't miss this brand new program, Bittersweet History of Chocolate, to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18. Visitors can collect period-appropriate chocolate recipes as they tour the historic houses. A fact-finding sheet for children about chocolate can be filled out as the young people move through the different buildings.

Guest speaker Cathy Bouchard, owner of Le Chocolat and Perfect Details in Naperville, will give a lecture on the history of chocolate at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in Century Memorial Chapel, where she will show samples of raw cacao and cocoa beans. She also will offer samples of authentic Mexican drinking chocolate that will be served in the Pre-Emption House Tavern. Admission is $8 adults, $7 seniors 62+ and $5.50 for youth ages 4-17. Children 3 and under are free.

Music Workshops Include Fun

Kids don’t have to be musicians to enjoy these workshops for ’tweens and teens on Saturday, Feb. 10, with award-winning singer/songwriter Amy Lowe.

• In “Sing the Blues,” kids will learn how to sing and write blues-style songs from 10 a.m. to noon. For fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders, the fee is $12 per child.

• Students in eighth grade through high school seniors can learn the art of songwriting from a pro through activities and improvisation in “From Story to Song” to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. The fee is $18 All workshops are held at Naper Settlement. For reservations, call 630.420.6010.

Research Library Has Weekend Hours

If you're researching your family tree or the history of your home or business, you'll definitely want to put the Naper Settlement Research Library on your list of resources. The Research Library will be open the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weekly hours are also available on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although appointments for Thursday and Saturday are not needed, appointments can and will be made to accommodate researchers throughout the week. In February, the Research Library will be open Feb. 3.

The expanded weekend hours allow access to a collection that contains over 500 reference volumes, more than 3,000 general history and family files, and over 5,000 images. Bound cemetery, census, birth, death and marriage records for DuPage County are available in addition to Internet access and genealogical Web sites.

More Fun Added to Day Camps

The All American School's Out for Girls day camps to be held on March 2 and over spring break March 26- 30 have extended hours from 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Girls in grades 1-4 can have a blast at day camps designed just for them. Party with historical characters, create crafts and hear stories of the past. Each day is different. The fee is $35/day/child. Sign up at (630) 420-6010.

Ambroise Vollard Exhibition Coming to Art Institute

February 6th, 2007

Ambroise Vollard Exhibition Coming to Art Institute

In February when the Art Institute of Chicago opens a much awaited exhibition focusing on the colorful career of Ambroise Vollard, Chicagoans will have good reason to feel somewhat connected to the legendary French art dealer and publisher who championed the works of an unknown avant-garde artist named Pablo Picasso. Vollard is credited with providing early exposure and support to Picasso, thus helping to launch modern art. Oddly, it would later be the unlikely alliance of Chicago’s gruff  Back-of-the-Yards Mayor Richard J. Daley and the flamboyant Pablo Picasso that helped propel modern art  beyond the galleries and into public spaces.

When the 31-story Civic Center complex – now Daley Plaza - was completed in downtown Chicago in the 1960s, it was hoped that a sculpture by a world-class artist could be commissioned to highlight the plaza area surrounding the building. A civic committee recommended the challenge be offered to Picasso - a daring recommendation at the time since public art in metropolitan areas was generally staid and involved mostly statues of historical figures to avoid controversy. But to the committee’s surprise, the conservative Daley enthusiastically endorsed the recommendation and Chicago’s masterpiece by Picasso was unveiled in 1967.  The 50-foot-tall, 162-ton steel landmark has become a signature image for Chicago and its public presence continues to symbolize the evolving look of major cities.

The Vollard exhibition at the Art Institute will demonstrate the significance of dealers in promoting careers and styles and it will provide a chance to view masterpieces by Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir and many others, explaining how these works were presented to the public.

The exhibition runs from February 17 to May 12. Don’t miss it! And, just maybe, before or after you go, take a swing by the Daley Plaza for a renewed appreciation of our city’s very own Picasso.
